Carols by Candlelight

A nearly full church enjoyed the 2018 carols by candlelight service. Although the format is similar year by year, details change. Many thanks to all who had rehearsed, took part or helped set up the event.

The service took the form of Bible texts relating to the promise of the coming of Christ, or the actual story, Congregational carols, choral carols and prose.

In a brief talk, Gillian Gamble spoke of the gift of Christ and urged everyone to receive this most precious gift.

Christmas Preparations

At this time of year an enormous amount of hard work is undertaken by many members of the church in getting ready for Christmas – and we would like to thank everyone of them. The pictures below are just examples of some of that work.
The pictures feature the magnificent dilapidated stable erected by Derek Bowering and Ant Johnson, the foyer decorated by the 10th Oadby Brownies, and the tree with decorations by Brookside School pupils.
So thank you to all of them.

Carolling at Sainsbury’s

A sizeable group from St Paul’s met in the entrance hall of Oadby Sainsbury’s on Saturday (15th). We feared that the group might be diminished in size by the horrendous weather (freezing cold, wind and rain) but there are a good group of hardy souls who gathered. For over an hour we sang almost all of the well-known carols. Christmas is a season of giving, and we also handed out sweets to all the passers-by who would like them.

A board indicated who we were, and gave details of our other activities over Christmas.

Home Group Christmas Meal

Many of our home groups undertake social activities together, as well as their primary purpose of Bible study and prayer. Nothing builds up friend ships more than eating together. This Friday a number of home groups met together for a Christmas meal at Brown's in Allandale Road – where good food and conversation was had by all.

Coffee Pot Carols

Members of Coffee Pot, the Thursday morning group met on the 13th for their Carol service. The service was held sitting around the tables, which were afterwards used for mince pies and tea or coffee. The service was led by Steve and we traced the wonderful history of Christ’s coming to earth, for us, using Bible readings and carols. There was also a PowerPoint presentation in which the story was told using titles from television shows (very clever but there were some horrible puns – such as the Magi came from East Enders!).

Now we are into the full flow of St Pauls Christmas activities. These can be found by following “A Church near You” on the Internet and looking for Oadby St Pauls.

Gifts for Christmas

We have just had our gift service. During the course of the morning service, people brought up gifts and left them at one of two tables. For one table, people wrapped gifts, for which tags with the age and sex of a child in a hostel or refuge (but no names) had been issued in advance. These had been notified to us by the institutions concerned.

On the other table were unwrapped gifts of items that would be special for asylum seekers being cared for by the Welcome Project at St Martin’s house, the diocese of Leicester headquarters. All those organising the gift service were thrilled by the generosity of the congregation.

Giving is an integral part of the Christmas festivities as we remember the greatest gift of all; the gift by God of his only Son, Jesus. It’s a joy to be able to share these gifts with those who might otherwise receive little, this Christmas.

A Christmas card from the Oadby Churches

A Christmas card from all the Oadby Churches has now been delivered to everyone in Oadby. There was a competition for the cover design, which was won by a Supertrooper (Sunday School) member from St Paul’s. Inside are details of the Christmas activities of most of the churches in Oadby.

It’s good to be able to work together like this. Do take the opportunity to join in any of those services.

The Nativity (as it wasn’t!)

The Christmas season at St Paul’s started with a community film night showing “Nativity”– the hilarious story of a school Nativity play, where everything goes wrong, but everything finishes up happily. It seemed to be enjoyed by all.

The next community film night is at 630 p.m. on 12 January, when we will be seeing “Paddington 2.” Do come along and join us.

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

This week marks the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. It’s a fantastic opportunity for you to join Christians all over the world in prayer and action. We’ve seen countless seemingly impossible situations turned around through prayer, so let’s pray together that God would do immeasurably more than we can expect or imagine through our prayers this week.

Father God,

As one Church, united under your holy headship, and knowing that we are all one family in Christ;

We pray for those who suffer in your name all over the world, our brothers and sisters,

Who share in that same great gift of salvation through your Son, but who face injustice, oppression and even death because of their faith in you.

We want to walk with them as they journey through the valley of darkness,

And we pray knowing that you are a God of compassion, comfort, and justice; who hears their prayers and moves in power to protect them, whatever they face.

We pray that you will grant them strength, courage, and protection from those who seek to harm them because they follow you;

Guidance and wisdom for when their path seems impossible to tread, and hope for a future where they have the freedom to worship you without fear.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen

Oadby Remembers

To commemorate the 83 Oadby men who gave their lives during the First World War different community groups have decorated soldier silhouettes. Here are the 3 decorated by our young peoples groups at St Paul's. In the order they appear in the picture from left to right, Little Angels Toddler Group, Tribe and Supertroopers our Sunday morning groups for Secondary and Primary aged children. All 83 will be gathered together and displayed in the St Peter's Centre over Remembrance weekend along with the displays put together by the Oadby Remembers project over the last 4 years.

Prayers for all those affected by the Helicopter tragedy

On Sunday afternoon I visited the King Power stadium with my family and we left an electric tea light each 'with love and prayers'. As we added them to the ever growing tributes to those who lost their lives we were struck by silence of such a large crowd. We prayed for the family and friends of those affected by what had taken place and for the emergency services doing their jobs.
The Bishop of Leicester has written this prayer
God of all grace,
You love all that you have made,
And your mercy is over all the world,
Comfort those who grieve for loved ones,
Strengthen those who care for the bereaved,
And support this great city of Leicester,
As we work together to express your love,
We ask this in your holy name.
Amen

Lego swap shop

On Sunday we held our latest Fun@4 where we looked at the story of the walls of Jericho. We played games, had craft and sung songs as well as watched a video of the story followed by a delicious tea. We also held a Lego Card swap shop! Lots of people from church donated their packs from Sainsbury's and we managed to complete a number of the young peoples books. Thanks to those who sorted them all out and to all who came along and joined us.

Bible Society

The charity supported by St Paul's, that we are  concentrating on in our prayers and presentations this month,  is the Bible Society. On the website, they explain their work as follows: "Working in over 200 countries, Bible Society is a charity on a global mission to bring the Bible to life for every man, woman and child. We believe that when people engage with the Bible, lives can change – for good."
We will be celebrating Bible Sunday later this month.

Talking Jesus

Talking Jesus is a new series of sermons. Steve breached the first in the series yesterday, telling of his hope that the series may help people to find it a little more easy to share their faith with others. He shared some research which showed that there was some sympathy for the Christian faith among those who did not currently believe.

We look forward to more of the series.

Welcome Back Keith

Among our congregation yesterday was Keith Waddell. Keith is an eye surgeon who leads a team based in Mbarara in Uganda and is on home leave. Keith was invited to give us an update of his work and he told how his project caring for retinoblastoma (an eye cancer usually found in children) has now expanded to neighbouring Rwanda and also to South Sudan, DRC and Burundi.

Let’s pray for this practical expression by the Christian church of the love of God for these needy people.

The Debt Saviours - Christians Against Poverty

The BBC have been making a documentary about Christians Against Poverty and it will be aired Friday 5th October at 9pm on BBC2. The BBC have give the programme the name 'The Debt Saviours'

CAP took a huge step of faith in allowing this film to be made ( faith spelt R-I-S-K!) . The film feature the stories of clients whose lives have been transformed initially through debt help but through prayer and introduction to Jesus.

CAP are urging us to tell our Christian friends to watch this programme to encourage them that Jesus working though his church really can transform lives ( if they don't already know!) CAP are also asking for prayer that those who do not have faith will be challenged positively and will see Christians Against Poverty as a force for good in our very secular society.

Harvest Celebrations

On Sunday we held our Harvest Celebrations. Many thanks to all who worked hard to decorate the church and to all those who gave so generously. All the goods received were shared between Oadby Food Bank and The Welcome Project. In her sermon Gillian looked at the journey of tomatoes from the field to the supermarket shelf with 15 different stages in the process. It was great to see so many in church and a joy to welcome a number of visitors.

Sandra – We Welcome You into the Lord's Family

Today, Richard and Jordan Chambers brought their daughter Sandra for baptism. We were reminded of Jesus' words: "do not discourage the children from coming to me." So it was a delight to welcome Sandra, her parents and grandparents, godparents and friends to St Paul's.
We were reminded that the Christian life is a journey, and Gillian suggested things that Sandra and we needed on our life's journey. Out of her suitcase she brought a lighthouse, as we need the light of Christ to show us the right way to go; a toy lamb, with a cross to show which farmer she belonged to and the reminder that Christ would be her good Shepherd; a set of footsteps leading to the font, reminding us of her journey to Christ; a bottle of water, reminding us that Christ wanted to wash all our sins away; and a frieze of a family to remind us that in baptism Sandra will be joining the worldwide Christian family.
After the baptism and Communion, Sandra was given a candle to remind her of the light of Christ, who would go with. Then everyone was treated to a piece of the baptism cake with their coffee.
Sandra, as we promised in the service, we will all seek to support you in your future Christian life.

Running to Help

By happy coincidence to the subject of our service today (the Christian charity Tearfund), our Rector, Steve Bailey, was running in the Great North Run to raise funds for Christian Aid. This is another charity that seeks to help the poorest in society in the name of Christ. Steve has been sponsored by many members of the congregation of St Paul’s.

Light for Those Who Are in Darkness

When Jesus came, he promised light to those who are in darkness. Of course, he meant spiritual light to those who were in the darkness of sin, but who could now come into the light of relationship with his father through the forgiveness he was able to offer by his death on the cross. But he also came to the poor and needy, and in this world, some of the poorest have no physical light.

Our service today was led by Karen Johnson, who highlighted a project by the Christian relief agency Tear Fund to bring light to poor communities. As an example, she told us of a community in DRC Congo where a solar panel, feeding batteries was able to provide a light for reading and security. It also provided light for a small nursing station which the project had built. The combination of the light and the clinic meant that a 19 year old was able to avoid a three-hour journey to the nearest other maternity.  The service was held in a church without lights (on a very grey day) to emphasise the importance of light. And a cross covered in baking foil was surrounded with lit T-lights, making it shine in the darkness.

We were all encouraged to think of something that would help make a difference for our world.

Prayer and Praise

At 7.30 p.m. last night (Friday 7 September) a group of about 20 met at St Paul's for 1 1/2 hours of prayer and praise. John Griffin led us with some Christian songs of praise and worship and then there was a time for people to pray for whatever they felt the Holy Spirit was leading them. Issues varied from the local needs of people in the church, to the wider issues involved in "seeing God's kingdom come," in our country, to committing to God the enormous needs of the world.
This is intended to be a quarterly event. Next time, come and join us.

Joint Service

As has been customary in recent years, this Sunday, the Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend, was a joint service between St Paul’s and St Peter’s. This year it was held at St Peter’s. The service was led by Steve Bailey, the rector, and Liz Wilson, the vicar at St Peter’s preached.

Her sermon was the latest on the series of characteristics of the Church. This week, it was that of love. She pointed out that Greek had many words for love (the sacrificial love of God, sexual love, the love of parents and family, and love of friends). She pointed to the story of St Peter, who had denied Jesus. And when, after the resurrection, Jesus had asked him: “do you love me (agape – love of God)?” he had only been able to reply: “you know that I am your friend.” Eventually, Jesus just asked him: “are you my friend” and Peter replied: “you know that I am.” Even with this weakest affirmation, Jesus was able to use him, and gave a task: “Feed my sheep.” So too, it is for us. Jesus will transform our weakest love. Above all these forms of love stands the cross – the sign of Christ’s supreme sacrificial love for us.

Members of both churches took part in leading the service. It was good to meet together as we remembered the love of Christ for us, as we partook of Communion together.

Principal Services — July — September

Dear Friends,

Following on from last year's success, we are holding "Holiday at Home" and look forward to celebrating with them in our service on 8th July. A month later in August we are again running a summer "Holiday Club" for primary school aged children. Their celebration service on 12th August is followed, hopefully, by a BBQ.
We continue with our sermon series based on David Watson's book I Believe in the Church through July & August. In September we welcome Sandra for Baptism and family who will be here to celebrate with Richard & Jordan.
Also in September we will be commissioning our Home Group leaders and celebrating with the groups all that they do to help us grow in our discipleship.
Finally at the end of the month we celebrate Harvest which will give us a great opportunity to invite others to join us following on from our Church Open Day on Saturday 29th September.

Every blessing,
Steve

Barbecue Season

About two thirds of St Paul’ church members are linked to a Home Group. These vary in the day and time that they meet to suit their members, but most meet fortnightly. They are opportunities for Bible study, prayer, discussion and mutual encouragement, as well as joint social activities.

Many take a break for the peak summer months, but often join in a barbecue before they do so. One example is shown here.

Everyone will be very welcome to join one when they meet again in September.

Holiday at Home

The summer months are a traditional time to get away for a holiday. However, there are many, especially those who are older, who find it difficult to get away. Following their success last year, Helen Vickerstaffe has led a team at St Paul’s to organise A “Holiday at Home this week.”
For four days this week they have organised activities often associated with a holiday break, which seem to have been very well received by all those who came.

Here are a few photo's from today, there was chocolate to taste this morning during a demonstration from folks at Cocoa Amore. After a buffet lunch there were various craft activities in the afternoon
We would like to thank Helen and the team for all their commitment

Holiday at Home

Today is the start of our Holiday at Home!
After the success of last years event we are running another Holiday at Home this year from the 5th-8th July.
Each day includes food and different activities. Today we look forward to welcoming a Chocolatier who is going to give a demonstration, I am hoping there will be some samples!!

Parish Magazine

The latest edition of the Parish Magazine was out this weekend. Here is my lead article reproduced in full...

I wonder, how long have you been going to church for? There are no longer service certificates or awards given out for the number of years that you have been a church-goer or have worshiped in the same place. Can you remember back to when you started coming along to church? Maybe you were too young to remember anything that took place then! Going to church, meeting with other Christians to worship together is an essential part of our faith, there is no such thing as an isolated Christian. We are all called to be part of the Body of Christ.

Setting aside time for God, to worship and pray is not a duty but rather a joy. For it is in our coming together as church that we realise we are not alone. Through worship we are reminded of who God is, of his sovereign rule and reign and of his great love for us. We gather together to be encouraged, challenged and strengthened in our faith so that we can be sent out to live and to work to God’s praise and glory.

How do you arrive at church? I don’t mean by car or walking! Do you come because you feel you should? Do you drag yourself out of bed and struggle to arrive on time? Or do you arrive with a sense of expectation, looking forward to encountering God through the Holy Spirit? Not every week promises to be an amazing encounter but the danger with our years of churchgoing is that we get so used to what we think is going to take place that we fail to come with expectation that God is going to do anything at all!

So here are some top tips that might help you to meet with God during worship…

1, Arrive in good time and make time before the service begins to still yourself, to pray and to ask God that you would be open to whatever he wants to do in your life during the service.

2, Engage your brain and participate in the service. Focus on the words you are singing, saying or praying. Don’t let the familiarity of the words allow them to simply wash over you. Focus on a word or phrase, remind yourself what it means and be encouraged by it.

3, Bring your Bible. Engage with the word of God. Read it daily. Meditate on it. Listen to God speak to you through his word. Christians in other parts of the world long for a copy of scripture in their own language, we have so many translations available to us. Don’t take them for granted, use them.

4, Take notes during the sermon. Our lovely Clergy and Readers spend hours preparing their sermons for a Sunday. We would all be really encouraged if it looked like you were noting down insightful points from them! This is the part of the service that is most likely to be different week by week. How do you remember and engage with what the preacher is saying? Taking notes will help you with this. And we would always be delighted to discuss things raised from a sermon with you. How about trying to come up with a single sentence summary of what you heard in the sermon and sharing it with someone, even the minister on the way out of church, it will be so much more encouraging than, ‘nice sermon vicar’! And be prepared to be challenged by the sermon too, and to ask the question, ‘what am I going to do differently in response to what I have just heard’?

5, Be prepared to respond. If God is challenging you, if the Holy Spirit is convicting you, if Jesus lays something on your heart be willing to do something about it. This is the hard part but it is also where change and transformation occurs. As we step out in faith and trust, as we respond to what God is doing, so we will become more aware of his work in our lives. Don’t delay the action part otherwise the danger is it may never happen. Respond as soon as possible and, if appropriate, share it with someone else too.

6, Pray. Much of the service can feel as if it is being ‘done to us’. Don’t abdicate your responsibility to be involved. Especially in the times of quiet, pray that God would be with you. Let your prayers be authentic and heart felt.

7, Remain faithful. God remains faithful to us. Even when he may feel distant, when prayers go unanswered or life is tough God is with us. He is always worthy of all our worship, praise and thanksgiving. Giving thanks in all circumstances is a challenge but it demonstrates our commitment to God who gave everything for us.

The local church is the hope of the world. The Body of Christ needs all its members to function well. We need the church and the church needs us. May we all play our part as sisters and brothers in Christ in this place. May the name of Jesus be glorified as we come expectantly to worship him week by week. And may God bless us in all we do.

I Believe in the Church

Through the summer months our sermon series is based on David Watson's book I Believe in the Church. The series runs across both churches. Last summer we looked at the different biblical models of church, this year we are looking at the different things we do as church. We started a few weeks ago on the topic of worship.
On Sunday, Karen, one of our lay readers preached on the topic of Reading God's Word. You can listen to her sermon here along with our other most recent sermons.
We also made use of our new Order of Service booklets. Thanks to those who have worked hard to produce them.

Once you've been there you can wander down to St Paul's for Afternoon Tea & Cakes from 2.30pm!

Fun@4

On Sunday we held our latest Fun@4, a messy church style event. We continued our story of Moses and thought about the 10 Commandments. Here are some pictures from the day.

Our next event for young people is our Summer Holiday Club from the 8-10 August. Fun@4 will return in the Autumn term!
